Top Girls is telling us something. It is making us question some the modern day values. According to Broadway review Top Girls the play paints an honest portrait of what it means to be a woman in today’s world. The play shows that women of today have something common with these women from history and vice versa.

In the play Top Girls these historical women have parallel characters in modern day life. Take the case of Isabella Bird, who has left her home to become an explorer. She is much like the modern day Marlene, who has left her daughter with her sister so that she could pursue her career goals. The inarticulate Dull Gret, the harrower from hell, is much similar to Angie.

The play is set in the dawn of Margaret Thatcher era. Marlene, the main character of the play has escaped her poverty and moved on to an affluent world. During this transition she had to make many sacrifices and choices. Broadway review Top Girls highlights these choices and sacrifices that Marlene had to make to reach the top. The play puts forth a very pertinent question- Can a woman have a successful career without sacrificing her family?

Great Casting

Broadway review Top Girls has been broadly appreciated of its cast. Martha Plimpton essays the role of Pope Joan, a historical figure who disguised as a man and ruled the Vatican in the ninth century until she gave birth to a child. Ms. Plimpton has a very thundering presence on stage and makes the character come alive. Ms. Plimpton is also known for her work in Tom Stoppard’s The Coast of Utopia for which she received a Tony Award nomination in 2007. She was also seen as Imogen in Cymbeline on Broadway.

Critics have applauded the role played by Jennifer Ikeda. She has essayed the roles of Lady Nijo and Win in this play. The character of Lady Nijo is the one that has been highly appreciated. Lady Nijo is a Japanese emperor’s concubine and Jennifer Ikeda excels as Lady Nijo.

Elizabeth Marvel essays the role of Marlene, a tough career woman with seemingly no soul. Elizabeth Marvel is well known for her other Broadway appearances in Seascape, An American Daughter, Taking Sides, and Saint Joan.
